You can ride in just about any type of stretch limo for a lot less than you’d expect– if you know how to drive a hard bargain. Steps: 1. Assess your finances. A standard limousine (four to six passengers) will set you back about $40 to $80 per hour; a stretch limo (six to eight passengers) runs slightly more–about $60 to $100 per hour. Both have an hourly minimum of four to five hours (although this is usually negotiable). For specialty limos such as a Mercedes, a Hummer or a superstretch (up to 22 passengers), costs can top out at $3,000 for the night. 2. Research, research, research. Be sure the limo operator is licensed and insured. Decide what type of limo you want (standard, stretch, superstretch or specialty) and for how long, based on the event and the number of people in your party. What are you looking for, whether it’s a bar, stereo, TV and DVD player, video-gaming system, intercom, sunroof, Jacuzzi, or all of that and a bag of chips. Prices may or may not be posted online. You’ll need to do some phone work to get the best deal. 3. Find out the year and make of the limo you’ll be hiring, its condition, and the complimentary amenities before you give a deposit. Be sure the deposit is refundable if the limo doesn’t meet with your satisfaction. Many limo companies will advertise one type of car and show up at your door with something entirely different. Most list photos of their limos on their Web sites. If quality is a top priority, plan a visit to the limo company and reserve the exact limo that suits your needs. 4. Hire a quality driver. This is crucial–a bad driver can ruin your evening. Make sure the drivers are experienced, professional and know the area. Provide an itinerary to the company beforehand so the driver knows where he or she is going and what to expect. When the driver shows up, be sure to communicate any special needs you have. 5. Ask whose responsibility it is to stock the limo with any necessary party favors ahead of time. Some companies will provide everything you need; others expect you to bring your own. Sometimes you can negotiate a lower rate if you offer to stock the bar yourself. 6. Find out if gratuities are included in the rate; regardless, you’ll be expected to tip your driver, so try to keep it separate. Overall Tips: Make sure your limo is ample enough to fit everyone comfortably. If you have six passengers, get a car that accommodates eight. If you want premium liquor, negotiate that up front, or plan to bring your own. Ask if smoking (or other activities) is allowed. Even if it’s not, most drivers will look the other way if the price is right. If it’s truly a special occasion, don’t be cheap. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for: Most higher-end limo companies have superior drivers, vehicles and accoutrements. Try to clear everything with your driver in advance. He or she is your captain for the evening and can be your best friend or worst nightmare. Overall Warnings:Make sure the limo company and their drivers are properly licensed and insured when making your reservation. This will ensure you are dealing with a reputable company.

For anyone interested in saving money at the gas pump and helping the environment, the new hybrid cars are an excellent choice. Small and fuel-efficient, hybrids are now being made by more manufacturers than ever.Although hybrids cost more, and can be hard to find due to high demand, it still pays to choose a hybrid. Consider the following reasons to buy a hybrid next time you are in the market for a new car.Smaller, More Efficient EnginesThe hybrid’s fuel efficiency is increased by its small size and the use of lightweight materials. Periodic engine shut-off is another fuel saving feature of the hybrid. When it is stopped in traffic, the hybrid’s engine temporarily shuts off. The engine restarts automatically when the car is put back in gear.Hybrids are powered by the combination of an efficient gasoline engine backed by an electric motor for acceleration. The electric motor is powered by batteries that are recharged automatically by recapturing the kinetic energy usually lost during braking, known as regenerative braking. When the car is slowing down, the electric motor runs backwards, acting as a generator to charge the battery. With this collection of advanced fuel efficiency features, hybrids can outperform conventional cars in several arenas.Environmental FriendlinessAnother reason hybrids are more environmentally friendly than conventional gas engines is that they idle less and use fuel more efficiently. The hybrid not only gets better gas mileage, it produces less pollution than other, non-hybrid cars. Some hybrids are getting 10 to 20 miles per gallon more than a regular gas engine. They are also capable of reducing harmful emissions by 90%.Many hybrids use aerodynamic design to reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency. Low rolling tires made of special resistant rubber reduce friction on the road. The high capacity, nickel-metal-hydride battery pack is reliable and available to power the hybrid when needed. Hybrids also use the latest in power-train technology, for integrated power management that contributes to fuel efficiency.Popularity Enhances Styles And ChoicesMore makes and models are now being offered as the popularity of hybrid cars continues to escalate. Buyers can now purchase the Honda Civic and Accord, Ford Escape, and Toyota Camry in hybrids. GMC and Chevrolet are currently making 2 hybrid pick-up trucks. In the near future, Saturn, Lexus, Honda, and Chevrolet will make hybrid SUVs available to the public. Chevrolet has plans to offer its Malibu in hybrid form in 2007.You can get a hybrid that looks like a conventional car, such as the Ford Escape. Or you can choose a hybrid that looks completely different from anything else on the road, such as the Toyota Prius. With so many hybrid cars on the market, there is a style to suit almost everyone.Tax Incentives AvailablePeople who buy hybrids can get significant tax breaks from the US Federal government through 2006. The amount of your tax break is determined by your tax bracket and when you file. Some states are also starting to offer hybrid car tax breaks as well. Tax breaks backed up over the long run by lower fuel costs make hybrid cars a good buy.Fuel Efficiency Becomes A RealityAlthough most people have been aware of hybrids only in recent years, the technology has actually been around for a long time. Ferdinand Porsche built the first successful hybrid car in 1899. But hybrids first began to catch on in the 1990s when Honda introduced the Insight and Toyota introduced the Prius. It’s been a long wait, but fuel-efficient transportation is finally becoming a reality with the hybrid. As more of these cars take to the road, our air will become cleaner, and our country will be less dependent on foreign sources of oil.

Driving in winter conditions tests your car to the limit. If something isn’t working properly under the best conditions it certainly isn’t going to work when it’s cold and stormy. Here are some tips to keep your car running well in the winter. The first thing to check before the weather gets cold is the anti freeze level. Not only how much fluid is in the radiator, but also the ratio of antifreeze/water content. Have a tune up done. Have your spark plugs cleaned and re-gapped or replaced.Change to a lighter oil which will help protect your engine from excessive wear when starting a cold car. Heavier oil takes longer to circulate into the motor and internal damage can occur.Change to winter wiper blades are a must for icy driving.Whenever starting your car, make sure that there is nothing obstructing the tailpipe. Never warm up your car in a closed garage. If your car gets stuck out on the road run the heater every 10 minutes but never fall asleep with the car running.Have the battery serviced and load-tested. Replace the battery if it’s over 4 years old.Check the lights, heater and defroster.Inspect the belts and hoses to be sure they are free from frays, cracks, leaks or rotted rubber. Make sure that radiator hose clamps are tight to prevent leaks at the connections.Because of winter’s lower temperatures, the air pressure in tires will drop. Check tires after driving short distance to warm them up for an accurate reading. Adding air to cold tires can result in overinflated tires when they warm up.Place sandbags in the trunk over the rear axle for better traction in rear wheel vehicles. An winter emergency kit for the trunk should include: blanket, hats, boots, gloves, change of clothing, ice scraper, small snow shovel, flashlight, batteries, kitty litter for traction, jumper cables, a tool kit, tire chains, a properly inflated spare tire, wheel wrench and tripod-type jack.Additional items for the trunk include: A Help sign to put in your window, brightly-colored cloth, a compass, first aid kit, wooden matches in a waterproof container, scissors, string, and canned food along with a can opener.Always carry a cell phone or small change or a calling card for a payphone.Lastly keep the gas tank as full as possible.

In part one of this series we discussed how to create a show board that will be unique, and be an extension of your personality. In this article we will provide you with some tips on taking great photographs for display on your show board, or for wall hangings. The evolution of computer graphics has been carried into the automotive photography industry making car art explode. However, in order to get a high quality print, the photographs which are the foundation must meet minimum quality standards. Computer graphics can correct for some photography errors, but not all, and often these corrections take time, and time is money, your money. This article will focus on photography tips that I have learned over the years which have been helpful. When displaying your vehicle at a show, enthusiasts like yourself pay close attention to every detail down to the shine on the bolts to ensure that the car is perfect. The end quality of your display is dependent upon your attention to details. Whenever I take a photograph or create art I do exactly the same. Starting with the right photographs is key. Before taking your pictures keep in mind the following suggestions so you will get the best possible results.1. So many of your vehicles shine like a mirror, so it is important not to have it directly in bright sun to minimize the glare. Graphic tools can remove some of this from the picture, but often specific details such as emblems will be washed out and can not be restored. Pay attention to any reflections and shadowing that could make body panels look like a poor paint job or in need of body work. Also make sure that your reflection is not visible.2. Often there are small replica cars in the rear window or on display elsewhere in the car. If you have tinted windows often the replica will not be clear. I suggest that you take pictures both with the model showing, and with it removed.3. Remove any window plaques, displays or show stickers or items hanging from your mirror that you do not want to be in the photograph. They look great at a show, but could detract from the final photograph.4. Background selection is key. Unless you want the background where you are taking the photographs to be included in the final work, it is best to park the vehicle in front of a plain background such as a building or where there are no cars in the background. This will help with the editing for the fantasy graphics work.5. Take a series of photographs with all doors, hood, trunk are completely closed. This series should include the following shots.- Straight on from the front- Straight on from the back- Left front quarter to side panel shot- Right front quarter to side panel shot- Straight on left/right side- Real quarter panel shot. Many of you will have areas that are special to you, such as an emblem, gas cap, dash board, steering wheel, or even a specific body part. Take a photograph of each of these areas and incorporate them into the art work.
